Domestic and Crash Deck Scaffolding in Portsmouth | Careers in the Scaffolding Industry

As a close knit family unit, we’ve grown up in the scaffolding trade. Our father began the scaffolding company in 1980 and each of us has followed in his footsteps. C&K Scaffolding Limited is now a third-generation supplier and installer of standard, new build and crash deck scaffolding systems for domestic and commercial clients in Portsmouth and the south-east.

Between our 15 strong contractors we hold minimum Level 2 Scaffolding qualifications, and have completed the Operative Training Scheme (COTS) as controlled by the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS). Because we work on building sites, we also carry the mandatory Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards.

Several members of our scaffolding company have completed the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) as well.

Overall we share 200+ years’ experience in our chosen trade.

Working in Scaffolding

Before anyone considers a career in this industry, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you comfortable with heights?
  • Can you read technical plans?
  • Do you consider yourself to be physically fit?
  • How knowledgeable are you about health and safety?
  • Would you have an issue operating in harsh weather conditions?

Having considered the above, do you still think you’d like to train as a scaffolding erector in Portsmouth or Hampshire?

How are your communication skills? This is an important aspect of our job as we must be able to discuss risk assessments and method statements in a detailed and understandable manner with both domestic and commercial clients. Potential scaffolding erectors must also understand the importance of crash decks and safety equipment. Contractors who are assembling new build frameworks have to be meticulous about inspections. This is an area within the construction industry where individuals must have their eye on the ball consistently

This is the best way to begin work within any aspect of the construction industry as courses are divided between practical and classroom learning.

Practical experience will allow potential scaffolders to witness first-hand the various types of scaffolding in use on sites today. This form of training also instructs apprentices on how to perform the following routine tasks:

  • Calculate the amount of scaffolding required for each job
  • Perform risk assessments and create method statements
  • Deliver systems to various sites
  • Ensure the framework will have a stable foundation
  • Erect standards, ledgers and transoms
  • Insert platforms, safety rails and netting
  • Carry out safety inspection on a regular basis
  • Dismantle and remove the frameworks at the end of a contract
